Don’t observe…Serve!
January 18, 2010I see their mouths moving, but I cannot hear what they say. I see their gestures, but cannot locate their actions. I believe, just as many others do, that our words are the catalysts for actions, because, if nothing is to follow, then they are just hollow sounds. Dr. King was a man of words and actions. At his core, his viewpoint of humanity posited itself on the proposal that “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’
As we celebrate the life of this great man, let us extend our hands to help those in need. We have all witnessed the suffering of the people of Haiti, but let us not forget that we have suffering in America as well. At this very moment, everyone is asking for financial donations to help. Understanding the economy we live in, if you do not have money to offer then offer your time. Time, for many organizations, is just as valuable as financial donations.
In keeping Dr. King’s dream alive, let us provide answers to that most persistent and urgent question. I am sure that Dr. King would say that it is not about what you would like to do or wish you could do, but about what you are doing and what you have done.

Hello, my name is Pamela and i’m here to tell you about what I think about this summary. Dr. King has always devoted his time and life to help the world become more. I think that people are so worried about what the next person would think. See as for myself, I haven’t really done anything for the people in Haiti but wish I could. As I see the people that are doing really bad on the television, it makes me feel very sad. If I was back in the day with Martin Luther King Jr. I would’ve been by his side completely.
I agree 100 percent! Many people only adress the civil rights aspect of Dr.King’s dream but,i believe that there is far more to his dream than ending segregation. What happened to the elements of love for your brothers and sisters inspite of race, color or religion? Or doing the right thing…because its the right thing to do?! It seems to me that it takes a catastrophic event to occur for “we the people” to open our eyes and reach out to those in need. Often we assume that helping someone requires money, financial donations to organizations like Red Cross etc. Yes,those are options…but is money the only way we can lend a helping hand? How could we look past volunteering at local shelters, food drives,or participating in fund raisers for victims in need (Haiti,Hurricane Katrina, etc.) Maybe,we know what we can do to help but choose to ignore goodwill.Mmmm. Procrastination? Im so grateful for the leaders that didn’t procrastinate. The great men and women like Dr.King that stood up for what was right and accually put in the sleepless nights and longsuffering needed to achieve that goal. They say it only takes one to make a difference.in 2010 lets keep Dr.Kings dream alive.
Janique,
I agree that Martin Luther king would say it is not about what you would wish to do or wish you could do, but what you are doing or have done. I feel many people should have done something including me to keep his dream alive. I also feel bad for the people in Haiti because if I can do something to help them I would. Also for financial donations I agree if you don’t have money to give offer your time.
