Doing The Right Thing

April 2, 2010

Doing the right thing is not always the easiest thing and in some instances it can negatively affect your future.  Since my last entry, we have had passed a national healthcare plan. I watched, as many other did, the acrimonious debates that took place on both sides of the aisle.

Although I do not agree with the mandates, I do see the need for national healthcare. If history has shown us anything, it is that we live a precarious existence.  None of us know what tomorrow will bring and although we may enjoy the fruits of life today, tomorrow that may change. We need a mechanism in place to protect those among us who may have the misfortune to be diagnosed with some genetic calamity or other malady that, through its treatment, could have the potential to erode the financial security of their family.

I am wondering why so many people are outraged over this action. Our government has a history of doing what “the majority” of people do not want them to do.  I am sure, at some point, the majority would have liked for slavery to continue, segregation to remain in place and for women to remain in the house. Might I also remind you that the founders, that so many people like to invoke, defied their mandate as well. Instead of tweaking the Articles of Confederation, as they were sent to do, they created an entirely new form of government.

I applaud those who were courageous enough to do the right thing. It is about time that our country looks out for its own first instead of others. For those who cry out about the cost of the program, I say to you that we could recoup some of those costs if you just tell your congressman or senator to not support any aid to any foreign nation. We send billions of our hard earned taxpaying dollars overseas every year and no one seems to complain any about that. I hear no arguments about saddling our children with a debt burden, nor did anyone ask me if I wanted my money going there.

I do know that there will be a heavy price to pay for those who did what they did. It is my hope that those who come after will not be dissuaded from doing what is right versus what is politically expedient after seeing the heads of their predecessors mounted to a spike.
